Signs of Stress
I recently attended a seminar entitled Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents: Recognizing & Treating the Emerging Epidemic given by Dr. Paul Foxman, a trainer, author, and therapist who “has over 30 years of professional experience in a variety of settings.” I will touch on a number of topics Dr. Foxman covered which might be helpful to stressed out teens and early twenty-somethings in this and future blogs.
First I simply want to list what Dr. Foxman calls “Stress Signals.” An occasional bout of any one of these doesn’t necessarily indicate that someone has a full-blown anxiety disorder, but experiencing one or more of the signals may still show that someone has too much stress in their life now. The Stress Signals are:
- Restlessness
- Negative attitude
- Irritable/moody
- Muscle tension
- Fatigue/low energy
- Depression
- Stuttering
- Anxiety
- Behavior problem
- Sleep disturbance
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Grinding teeth
- Increased heart rate
- Cold/sweaty hands
- Breathing difficulty
If you recognize yourself anywhere on this list, you might want to try some of the Tricks and Techniques to Lower Stress from my website.
